Hollyhocks freely reseed in my garden and grow nearly eight feet into the sky. What a treat to watch the hummingbirds enjoy the summer blossoms, but in Fall the grasshoppers find the petals delicious and the leaves are eaten into web-like remnants.

The lilies in my garden open just as I am picking strawberries to fill my jam jars. The bumblebees tuck into the trumpets and emerge speckled with orange pollen.

In my distance are tall, willowy trees dancing in the breeze. In the Spring they bud and slowly turn a soft green. As I captured them in this painting, I recognized the image of cathedral windows. The chickadees flit among the branches and hop under the tulips finding seeds in last winter’s debris.

In the Fall I pot my neighbor’s lush geraniums and bring them into my studio, where they flower all winter inside the floor length windows. Painting them became my light hearted winter project.

For several years I wanted to paint the budding branches of our crabapple tree with the Spring sunlight and soft breezes. Upon seeing Van Gogh’s “Branches with Almond Blossoms” 1890, I knew how to compose such a painting.

The hidden porch behind this garden of daisies and poppies can be found in Sugar House. Sugar House, because sugar beets were brought here long ago to a sugar processing plant. This picturesque place has many unique old homes built on slopes and terraces. The owners take pride in filling their yards with heirloom flowers. I like to walk for blocks reveling in so much beauty.

I found this lush meadow behind a cabin in Montana. There is a stream with a waterwheel in it and clumps of willows growing. As I began to paint this wide expanse, I thought of the Biblical Eve and how hard she had to work as the gardener of the Earth. I decided to paint her in the middle of her garden.

A couple in my neighborhood have a garden that goes clear through the block. It is overflowing with flowers, vegetables and fruit trees. They bring in irrigation water and spend many hours weeding, pruning, harvesting and bottling their treasure. This little girl is a friend of mine and her nickname is Ladybug.
